Copenhagen, jan 27, 2003 (newstodate): SAS Cargo and Swedish Luftfartsverket (LFV) agree that the heat is off concerning plans for a new SAS Cargo terminal at Stockholm Arlanda.
Deadlines for a "final agreement" between the parties were proclaimed several times last year, but 2002 passed without a decision taken.
Both parties now agree that the current level of airfreigt and traffic volumes at Arlanda does not require the immediate solution earlier sought.
By 2006, Arlanda will need the space now occupied by SAS Cargo's 12,000 sq. m.terminal in the north, and by then the terminal should be relocated to the current airfreight area in the southern part of the airport.
-If only we reach a solution before the end of this year, we will still have ample time to construct a new facility for SAS Cargo's needs, says Christer Holst, LFV air cargo marketing dept.
SAS Cargo earlier refused to join LFV's proposal, together with Airis, for a new 40,000 sq.m cargo terminal with a planned annual production at 400,000 tonnes, pointing to the excessive building costs, and aircraft-to-terminal lead-time penalties involved.
According SAS Cargo, the company will need a new 18-20,000 sq.m. air cargo terminal capable of handling 250-300,000 tonnes per year, and allowing for joint SAS Cargo/Lufthansa Cargo operations.
