Copenhagen, JAN 15, 2003 (newstodate): Signs of market recovery in Sweden during 2002: this is indicated by the latest published statistics, comprising 3rd Quarter 2002, on export airfreight on airlines that are members of IATA, thus excluding notably integrators and express carriers.
The statistics shows that in 2002, Q3 outperformed Q2 by 19.8 percent in terms of volumes. This is the good news. The bad news is that, compared to the same period in 2001, total volumes in January-September 2002 were down by 4.6 percent to 68,962 tonnes, and by 6.2 percent in value, to 1.668 billion Swedish Kroner.
An unknown proportion of Swedens export airfreight is taken by truck into various major continental freight hubs, and estimates agree that this trend has probably increased during 2002 as forwarders tend to consolidate their airfreight shipments at hubs in order utilize big-volume benefits, fulfil partnership agreements with airlines, and gain access to more uplift capacity. This will eventually blur the picture as obtained by IATA.
According to the statistics, the North American market was by far the single most important export market for Sweden, aggregating 40 percent of the volumes (down 2.7 percent) and 37.2 percent of the turnover (up 2.5 percent).
Among Swedens other export airfreight markets, South East Asia was down by 16.4 percent in volumes, and 17.6 percent in value, while e.g. South America decreased by 28.2 percent in volumes, and 36.8 percent in value.
The only significant numerical increase was provided by the South Asian subcontinent, up 113.1 percent in volumes, and 106.1 percent in value. This market, however, represents only 7.9 percent in volumes, and 6.4 percent in turnover.
