Copenhagen, JAN 28, 2003 (newstodate): Kallax Airport, at Luleaa/Sweden, is fighting a tough battle to attract freighter traffic as a technical and fuelling stop on the new arctic traffic lanes through Russian airspace.
In 2002 the airport barely managed to handle some 20 freighters en-route between northern Asia and Europe/US via Anchorage, while the airport's total cargo volumes accrued to only 728 tonnes.
-We had hoped for a break-through in the latter part of 2002, but contrary to expectations rules for utilization of Arctica 1 were changed, and the freighter traffic did not come our way, says Peder Ronmark, Kallax Cargo.
Ronmark says, Arctica 1 is not in practice open for freighter traffic yet.
Kallax Cargo has therefore also stalled a project for a Northern Logistics Centre initially to focus on re-location to the airport of the huge Norwegian fresh salmon exports for Japan.
Other issues to be studied included integrated transports of general cargo to and from central Sweden, integrated transports for international auto-testing operations, and a St Petersburg freight hub for intermodal air, road and rail transportation.
