OCT 03, 2003 (newstodate): With Lithuania's entry into the EU by May next year, Lithuanian airport, Kaunas will probably lose its leading role in the country's air cargo industry.
-Kaunas has been thriving on air cargo imports, primarily transfer cargo from China destined for Russia. This traffic has, however, mostly been carried on IL-76 and other aircraft that will not meet EU's noise restrictions, says a source within the Lithuanian air cargo community.
According to the source, the trend is signicant already. Kaunas saw declining cargo volumes in 2002. Total air cargo throughput in 2002 was 8,478 tonnes, against 9,547 tonnes in 2001.
In 2001, the airport had 39 percent of all airfreight in the region, against Riga Airport's 22, Vilnius Airport's 20, and Tallinn Airport's 19 percent
