OCT 10, 2003 (newstodate): As for airport security, Finland is playing strictly by the rules, and has not added further demands on the air cargo industry as to cargo handling.
-We are adhering to the EU directive on security, and based on this there is no obejction to an off-airport cargo handling agent, or regulated agent, to offer such services, provided of course that he is certified to do so by the authorities, says Arja Pulliainen, Finnish CAA security inspector.
This is in contrast to practise in Denmark, while in line with the stand of the Swedish and Norwegian authorities on the issue.
-So far there are, however, no off-airport cargo handling agents in Finland. Swedish forwarders deliver their shipments to the airlines' cargo handling agents that are all situated at the airports.
-But should a company want to set up a cargo handling terminal outside the airport, there is nothing to prevent this, and an authorised agent would be fully capable of trucking export shipments to the continent, ready for carriage, she says.
