OCT 07, 2003 (newstodate): Volga-Dnepr Group has operated two AN-124-100s flights each transporting 135 tonnes of excavating equipment from St. Petersburg, Russia to Novosibirsk, Siberia with a stop-over in Ekaterinburg.
The equipment, destined for the construction of the Novosibrisk underground train system, was produced in Canada and then transported by boat to St Petersburg.
As Novosibirsk is land-locked, the only way to transport the cargo was by air, and flights were thus chartered by the Russian company OAO Bamtonnelstroy.
The cargo included pieces of equipment that were six meters wide and three meters high, weighing approximately 85 tonnes.
