NOV 11, 2003 (newstodate): Construction of a road to connect Greenland's Atlantic airport, Kangerlussuaq/Sdr Stromfjord with Sisimiut at the west coast, 170 km away, would open new markets to local businesses.
-We have already a large export of processed fish to foreign countries including Spain, Portugal, Germany, Sweden and Greece so we are familiar with the European markets, says Axel Brasch, Nuka A/S general manager, at Sisimiut.
-Access to the Atlantic airport at Kangerlussuaq would, however, open a whole new world for us with yet unexploited business opportunities, he says.
Among the products that might be brought to the European and other markets is fresh cod, which is much in demand at high price as most European countries have enforced a stop to local fisheries to protect the endangered species.
During the on-going political debates before the approval before the end of December of budgets for the new fiscal year, Greenland's home rule parliament will decide on a budget for a feasibility study as the next step towards realising the project for a road connection to be operational by October 2008 after a total estimated investment of DKK 250-300 million.
