NOV 13, 2003 (newstodate): With the abundance of cargo uplift capacity in a weak market, the importance of airline cargo loyalty programs has diminished in 2003.
-Our customers require us to shop for profitable rates to keep down own logistics costs, so earlier years' dependance on membership of individual airline loyalty programs has been reduced, probably causing a return to a more healthy competition in the market, says Mats Grandin, Kuehne & Nagel export airfreight manager.
According to Mr Grandin, this year's CASS accounts for the Swedish market will most probably show a decrease by 10-15 percent in volumes, and there is as yet no evidence of the traditional pre-Christmas peak to out-balance the losses earlier acumulated.
-Air cargo imports into Sweden are doing quite well, but exports have certainly dropped compared to last year, he says.
Exports to North America have performed rather satisfactorily, but exports destined to the Far East have exeprienced a significant drop, he says.
As a result of the changed relationship between capacity and demand, rates have fallen by as much as some 20 percent in the market.
