NOV 07, 2003 (newstodate): In January-October, air cargo has grown by 4.5 percent to a total of 308,9 tonners at Vagar Airport, The Faroe Islands.
In October, the growth was 6.5 percent, to 36.8 tonnes.
Due to highly demanding flight produces around the airport situated amidst mountainous surroundings, and a very short runway, only aircraft up to the size of Boeing 737 can traffic the airport, which also requires specially trained and certified cockpit crews.
The existing passenger-aircraft services allow only limited cargo capacity, so the island's exports, primarily consisting of fish products, have long expressed the needs for a dedicated freighter service.
Talks have long been underway with Maersk Air Cargo, but so far no conclusion has been reached as to the launch of a freighter service.
