DEC 06, 2003 (newstodate): Luleaa Kallax Airport in northern Sweden is finally heading for a break-through in the air cargo business.
According to press reports, Norwegian forwarding company, Nordnorsk Speditions A/S has decided to fly its exports of fresh salmong destined for the Japanese market from Kallax Airport from January, 2004.
A decision on aircraft or airline has not yet been finalised, but plans are to operate one or two flights per week via Arctica 1 through Russian airspace to Japan.
Kallax Airport was inaugurated November 16, 1999, and a company, chaired by Robert Arendal, has since sought to attract attention to Kallax as a convenient stop on routes between Northern Asia and Europe, USA - so far with most limited success.
According to press reports, the company to market Kallax as a Nordic "Anchorage" was actually drawing pretty close to a shut-down as the news from Norway raised new hopes for the enterprise.
