MAR 18, 2003 (newstodate): The air cargo industry will be in for a very rough time when a war in the Middle East finally erupts, says a source within the airline cargo industry.
-Routings will be changed, strict security measures will be enforced including 100 percent scanning of all shipments, and time frames will break down in the process, he says.
He also points to the chaos around transfer cargo at airline hubs when connections to booked flights are lost.
-On the top of it, I would not be surprised if airlines feel forced to introduce a special war surcharge on the top of the current security and fuel surcharges, already a heavy toll on the forwarders and shippers, he says.
