MAR 13, 2003 (newstodate): IATA sees a positive start to the new year, as provisional figures for January indicate positive results by most carriers in all major regions.
The freight market continued its good performance with total international traffic up 11.73 percent year-on-year, measured in FTKs.
Correspondingly, December 2002 saw a 10.05 percent growth, IATA says.
-All major regions show a strong upturn, with Far East airlines scoring as high as 15.48 percent growth, IATA says.
European carriers were up 10.55 percent year-on-year in FTK, compared to 3.27 percent in December, 2002.
-Global traffic figures are back to their levels of January 2001. Air transport lost two years of growth, but this long-awaited recovery is obviously now clouded by the crisis looming over Iraq, says Giovanni Bisignani, IATA director general and CEO.
