MAR 26, 2003 (newstodate): In its latest update on effects on air cargo from the Iraq war, Panalpina states that so far there has been no closures of any major air traffic corridor through the UAE and Iran.
On the routes between the Far East and Europe, no commercial freighters have been used for military purposes. And as the main Far Eastern and European carriers operate own freights on these segments, total freighter capacity wil not be reduced on these lanes, says Panalpina.
On passenger flights, needs for contingency fuelling have reduced cargo payloads. So far this has not, however, had any impact on Panalpina's network as most arrangements are based on freighter uplift. Capacity does however run tight due to restriced passenger aircraft operations.
Panalpina says normal traffic lanes between the Far and Middle East have remained operated by freighters, so freighter operations have yet been little affected by contingency routings.
As for traffic lanes from Europe to the Middle and Far East, Panalpina sees major Middle East-based carriers maintaining almost full scope scheduled operations without capacity cut-backs being reported. In contrast, several European carriers have cancelled flights and cut down on frequencies.
