APR 09, 2003 (newstodate): Despite modest performance by Finair Cargo's freighter services the company has currently no plans for changes in the traffic system.
The company's latest statistics, out today, show that cargo taken on scheduled cargo services dropped by 7.9 percent in March, and by 20.3 percent during the period January-March.
Finnair operates a once weekly Boeing 747 Transatlantic freighter from New York via Gothenburg to Helsinki, and a once-weekly Airbus A300B4 on the route Cologne-Stansted-Helsinki-Gothenburg-Stansted.
-The European freighter's current performance is much marked by the general downturn in the European cargo markets while we are seeing improvement in the Transatlantic freighter due to a weaker US dollar, which appeals to European consumers' buying power, says Timo Riihimaki, Finnair Cargo director marketing.
Riihimaki says the European freighter's prime task is to feed European cargo into Finnair's extensive and fast growing Far Eastern route network, also boosting the marketing and sales power by Finnair Cargo in the important German airfreight market.
-Taken together, the freighters are important to Finnair Cargo, and we currently have no plans for changes, says Hiirsimaki.
