APR 11, 2003 (newstodate): EUROCONTROL and EU today inked an agreement for a 5 million euro project to strengthen the institutional and operational structure of the aviation sector in south-eastern Europe.
The agreement covers two phases of a project intended to provide support to the civil aviation authorities and air navigation services providers in Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Serbia and Montenegro, and the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia.
The first phase will focus on identifying the
needs and the potential actions required in order to improve aviation safety and ATM in the region. It will conclude with a list of appropriate projects to be implemented in a second project phase.
In 1996, the region's air traffic amounted to some 5-6 million passengers and 125,000 aircraft movements, excludingoverflights. Traffic levels were down due to the conflict in the former Yugoslavia, but are now showing signs of gradual improvement.
