APR 23, 2003 (newstodate): Airport development lags behind among Hungary's 44 civil airports, but there is currently no consensus on who must foot the bill.
During the term of the former Hungarian government, 13 local municipalities and regional authorities took over responsibility for local airports with high, yet unfulfilled expectations of a sudden tourist traffic boom.
-Municipalities that took over their local airports from state ownership have only themselves to blame for the resulting difficulties, says Attila Simon, chief consultant at the Economy and Transport Ministrys aviation department, according to a Hungarian press report.
He points out that these airports previously enjoyed financial support from the State Privatization and Holding Rt (PV) and that, if the state has a stake in an airport, EU funds can be tapped for its development. Now that option is gone.
