APR 24 ,2003 (newstodate): SAS has withdrawn from participation in the privatisation in Lithuanian Airlines.
-Having assessed the value of the business case we have decided not to bid on the the Lithuanian carrier, says Hans Ollengreen, SAS sen vp communications & public affairs.
After the expiry of the initial phase, SAS was alone in bidding for Lithuanian Airlines after Finnair withdrew its participation.
After years of political hesitation, the Lithuanian state had finally decided to put 34 percent of the shares in the state owned company up for sale, later intending to increase this to 66 percent.
After SAS' decision, Lithuanian Airlines is facing a difficult future, being the national carrier in the smallest of the three Baltic airfreight markets, and exposed to heavy competition from other Baltic and Western carriers.
