APR 08, 2003 (newstodate): According to persistent reports in the Nordic media, SAS is considering an acquisition of shares in Estonian Airlines.
Maersk Air currently owns 49 percent of the Estonian carrier but may be interested in capitalizing on its assets after several years of depressing financial results, reports say.
SAS is currently in the process of taking over 34 percent of Lithuanian Airlines through the Lithuanian state privatization program, and already holds 47.2 percent of the shares in the Latvian carrier, airBaltic.
Thus, a firm grip on the three Baltic countries' carriers would enhance the exploitation of these markets to support traffic at SAS' Scandinavian intercontinental hubs.
Neither SAS nor Maersk Air has been available for comments on the issue.
