MAY 16, 2003 (newstodate): For Q1, Alitalia announces a a loss of 198 million euros before taxes and extraordinary items, 95 million euros down on Q1 last year.
The performance during Q1, already structurally conditioned by low-season factors, was further penalised by the negative effects on operating costs caused by the sharp rise in fuel
costs during the Iraq crisis and, to a lesser degree, by higher fees for metservices and airport assistance, as well as higher amortisation costs linked to fleet renewal, and the downturn in receipts relating to currency exchange operations, the cmpany says in a statement.
At the close of Q1, the Groups operational fleet consisted of 179 aircraft, of which 124 are wholly owned. Compared to December 31, 2002, the actual fleet size has increased by six units (the balance of the entry of two B777s, two 320s, two ATR72s and one ERJ-145, and the withdrawal of one MD11 combi).
