MAY 21, 2003 (newstodate): Warsaw may need a decision soon on the issue of a new airport to succeed Warsaw's Okecie Airport.
According to industry sources, Warsaw may need a new airport by 2006 already when the annual volumes of arriving and departing passengers may exceed seven million.
The airport currently handles about five million passengers and more than 100,000 aircraft movements.
Warsaw Okecie is presently planning to start construction of a new terminal, scheduled to be ready for operations by 2005 and increasing the airport's total annual capacity to 10 million passengers - a volume expected to be reached by 2012.
This will, however, still require an immediate decision on the building of a new airport that will probably have a total construction lead-time around ten years, sources say.
