MAY 28, 2003 (newstodate): Starting from early next year, Icelandair Cargo plans to expand its cargo terminal at Keflavik, built in 2001.
The current terminal covers 4,500 sq.m. including office floor, but will be expanded by a further 1,500 sq.m.
This will also compensate for the closing down, by May 1, of the former city terminal.
-We decided to close the city terminal to save costs as customers did not really care much for the extra service provided. Forwarders increasingly operate own facilities and arrange for own on-airport pickup and delivery, so there was litte need for the city terminal, says Petur Eiriksson, Icelandair Cargo president.
Mr Eiriksson says Icelandair Cargo is also currently implementing a new warehouse IT-system, Hermes, similar to the one implemented at BAWC's Ascentis at London Heathrow.
The new system started installation in February this year, and is expected to go fully operational by June 9.
