JUN 02, 2003 (newstodate): While belly capacity has been reduced due to the effects of the SARS spread, Singapore Airlines Cargo is expanding its freighter services "considerably".
-The reduced belly hold capacity in markets with undiminished demand for uplift has enabled us to increase the utilisation of the freighter fleet, says Kim Irmov, Singapore Airlines Cargo manager Nordic & Baltic, at Copenhagen.
According to Mr. Irmov, SQ Cargo is constantly evaluating demands, and extra freighter services are launched into a number of markets, including Hong Kong, Japan, and Taiwan.
-It is difficult to predict if the total volume of air cargo lifted by SQ Cargo is actually increasing during this quarter. But the proportion taken on freighters rather than on passenger aircraft is certainly growing significantly, he says.
The shift in proportion will ultimately reflect in SQ Cargo's financial result as the company pays for use of capacity on Singapore Airlines' passenger aircraft, while it owns its freighters itself.
SQ Cargo's freighter capacity is planned to grow by nine percent annually, and the latest Boeing 747-400 freighter was accepted this spring. A further 4 deliveries are confirmed for the coming 3 years.
