JUN 03, 2003 (newstodate): For the period January-April, Swedish airport, Gothenburg saw its export volumes down by 17.3 percent, to 7,795 tonnes.
During the same period, the airport's total air cargo volume was down by 7.3 percent, to 16,360 tonnes.
-We are facing a difficult period, and we see no immediate signs of relief, says Bjorn Lennartz, Gothenburg Airport marketing manager.
The tri-partite freighter from Gothenburg to Osaka is running a reduced program, down from five weekly to now four and, later in the summer, three weekly flights, while Finnair Cargo has suspended its freighter services from New York and the UK through Gothenburg to Helsinki for the summer, with no clear commitment to an eventual resumption of the flights in the autumn.
Only positive signals in the market are sustained operations by Polar Air between USA and Gothenburg.
-We may be seeing stiffening competition from other airlines in the market trucking air cargo out of Sweden to continental airports, like e.g Martinair, says Mr. Lennartz.
