JUN 25, 2003 (newstodate): A key meeting of major figures in the airline industry has decided on an action plan to reduce the cost of air traffic management across the continent as from 2004.
-About 5 percent of the total cost of flying a plane from point A to point B comes from ATM charges. According to recent estimates, if we made efficiency gains of 1 percent every year over 20 years, we could save some 7 billion Euro a cost which would then not have to be passed on to airlines, and in the end to the passenger, said Vctor M. Aguado, Director General of EUROCONTROL, at the meeting on June 23.
-EUROCONTROL is committed to the cost-effectiveness of the system, and I am delighted that our partners are also working towards the same objective, he said.
The meeting held at EUROCONTROLs Headquarters, was attended by CEOs of air navigation service providers, aviation industry representatives, IATA, the Association of European Airlines (AEA), European Regions Airline Association (ERA), Airport Council International (ACI), the European Commission and EUROCONTROL.
