JUN 19, 2003 (newstodate): The imminent need for a WOW-partner in USA has receded and is not now high on the agenda.
-As the center of gravity in the global air cargo business has clearly shifted from the North Atlantic to the Far East, the need for adding a US partner to the WOW air cargo alliance has become less acute, says Andreas Otto, the Lufthansa Cargo Board.
-Given the current outlook for the US airline industry we also do not see any immediate candidate for WOW-membership. We would certianly not take on a member that is under Chapter 11 protection, and we se no quality US airlines with a convincing management focus on airfreight, he says.
-Being a member of the STAR Alliance, United would have qualified, but also this airline has urgent needs for a thorough reorganisation before this would again be feasible, Mr Otto says.
According to Anreas Otto, WOW plans to invite the airfreight press to a conference early in August, to present an update on WOW's performance and plans.
