JUL 21, 2003 (newstodate):Today, Lufthansa Cargo is starting operations at its new US$161 million cargo terminal at New York JFK airport.
As the main tenant of the new facility, Lufthansa Cargo has an option to take over the remaining area in five years' time. The new complex will also be used by Lufthansa Technik.
LH Cargo has a warehouse area of about 10,000 square metres in the high-tech facility. The automated pallet warehouse contains the first 'lift & run' ULD management system in the US, which can house up to 330 freight pallets on three levels and simultaneously accept unit loads from the apron side and the landside. Eight cool storage positions are available for pallets or containers, in addition to special walk-in cooler and freezer rooms. The terminal has a state-of-the-art security system which relies on a combination of different access and control procedures ranging from CCTV to biometric fingerprinting systems.
25 percent of the airfreight destined for the United States arrives via New York's JFK and Newark airports, together totalling about three million tonnes of cargo. The most important hub for Lufthansa Cargo is JFK, where the company handles about 30 per cent of its entire cargo for the US market.
