JUL 14, 2003 (newstodate): Eurocontrol has selected SITA's AIRCOM Datalink service to connect its new Controller Pilot Data Link Communications (CPDLC) system in the Maastricht Upper Airspace Control Centre to aircraft equipped with Future Air Navigation System (FANS) avionics.
The FANS data link system has been installed in over 1,000 long range Airbus and Boeing aircraft using the link technology implemented in SITA AIRCOM as its primary communications channel with Air Traffic Control.
Maastricht is the first centre to introduce CPDLC operationally in continental airspace and there are plans to accommodate FANS more widely across Europe by 2007.
Eurocontrol's launch of its operational CPDLC system is the first concrete step in the Link2000+ Programme that will deploy CPDLC services using VHF Digital Link (VDL) Mode 2 networks.
