AUG 19, 2003 (newstodate): On August 17, an Air Canada Boeing 747-400 with 269 passengers and 13 crew members en route from Frankfurt to Toronto was diverted to Keflavik after smoke was detected in the passenger cabin.
At 15:27 the pilots sent a distress call to the Reykjavik Oceanic Center stating an emergency.
The aircraft was then positioned 570 NM southwest of Keflavik. Rescue teams at Keflavik and Reykjavik were put on full alert, and a P3 from the US Navy base at the airport flew out to meet the 747.
At 16:05 the pilots reported that there was no smoke to be seen anymore on board the plane, and the plane landed at Keflavik at 16:32.
The airline sent another plane for the passengers, who departed Keflavik early Monday morning.
The smoke was later found to have been caused by a fan that had overheated.
