AUG 13, 2003 (newstodate): SAS will be among the first commercial airlines to open traffic at Basra, the airline confirms.
Although the final and official papers have not yet been sent out by the US agency in Iraq, it is known that traffic rights will be bestowed on British Airways, Qatar Airways, Jordanian, Emirates, LOT Polish Airlines, and Gulf Air, in addition to SAS.
-We have been granted rights for a once-weekly rotation at Basra altough we had requested a twice-weekly frequency, says Troels Rasmusssen, SAS communications manager.
According to Rasmussen, SAS will now make a thorough assesment of conditions around the intended flight operations, primarily to ensure that operational and physical security and safety levels warrant a start of operations.
Rasmussen says SAS intends to operate a Boeing 767 on the route, also because of the aircraft's cargo capacity at around 15 tonnes.
-SAS Cargo has been among the first to ask for a start-up date, as the market has manifested a strong demand for cargo capacity into Basra, says Rasmussesn.
