SEP 15, 2003 (newstodate): Lithuanian Airlines does not see a drastic change in the Baltic picture after SAS' take-over of Estonian Air.
-After SAS' acquisition of Estonian Air and Maersk Air Maintenance, the company has strenghtened its position in the Baltic and Finnish markets, being also one of shareholders of airBaltic and with its Finnish subsidiary Air Botnia. But Estonian Air was our competitor even before SAS bought it, so we do not expect any drastic changes, says Giedrius Sniukas, Lithuanian Airlines Public Relations Officer.
-Lithuanian Airlines is preparing to face the strong competition in the air market of European Union next year, when our country will become a member of EU, he says.
During the early summer, SAS withdrew from its bidding on Lithuanian Airlines, poised for privatization. As Finnair had earlier bailed out as well, Lithuanian Airlines is now working on its strategy as an independent Baltic airline.
