SEP 09, 2003 (newstodate): Even if the Norwegian salmon export has been on the decrease in volumes since the latter part of 2002, it still plays an important role for KLM Cargo.
-The high density of the salmon, easily generating some 4,000 kg per pallet, makes it an ideal shipment in combination with other products like e.g. flowers, says Truls Jakobsen, KLM Cargo Norway sales manager.
-80 percent of the Norwegian salmon exports is trucked to the EU market, so we compete with others for the remaining 15 or 20 percent destined for intercontinental markets, he says.
KLM Cargo palletizes the salmon exports at Oslo and trucks it to Amsterdam within 22 hours, ready for loading onboard the airline's freighters for the Far East and other destinations.
Jakobsen says Japan, China, Hong Kong are the main salmon markets, but potentials are high in countries like India, South Africa, and USA depending on the relative strength of the Chilean exporters.
-Besides the fish exports, Norway also generates exports of off-shore related products, and ships spares, but on a much smaller scale and with less regularity, Jakobsen says.
