JAN 06, 2004 (newstodate): From today, Air France has become the first European airline to fly into Guangzhou in Southern China's Pearl River delta.
Initially operated five times weekly with Airbus A340-300 aircraft, the route will be increased to daily operations from July 14, 2004.
With 7.8 million inhabitants, Guangzhou is at the centre of a very dense industrial network, only 150 km from Hong Kong. It is Europe's fourth biggest investment centre in China and France's third. Its per-capita GDP ranks it third among Chinese cities.
Airfreight is also much in demand, with the region, excluding Hong Kong, expected to increase in volumes by 60 percent within a few years, overtaking Hong Kong's expected growth at 40 percent in the same period.
