JAN 07, 2004 (newstodate): Work has started on developing a commercial airliner protection system to be available within the near future.
11 defence technology companies including ARINC, Thales and Symetrics Industries have teamed up to meet the challenge, basing their concept of infrared countermeasures to protect commercial aircraft against missile threats on similar existing military productions.
Using this platform, the new concept is said to be "affordable" at a price of well under one million US dollars per aircraft, which compares favourably with other competing programs.
The design is planned to be finalised and demonstrated during the third quarter of this year.
