JAN 05, 2003 (newstodate): Plans are underway for establishing a new perishables cargo center at Durban, South Africa, to relieve the traffic through Johannesburg.
A feasibility study currently being worked out foresees a flow of up to 16,000 tonnes of perishables exports annually through the proposed center that will handle some 15 percent of the volumes now processed through Johannesburg.
A new center at Durban would reduce lead-times from the country's perishables products including cutr flowers, fruit and vegetables.
The project group envisages that an additional 54,000 tonnes of air cargto could be generated at Durban, including general cargo.
