OCT 21, 2004 (newstodate): DHL has announced its decision to downgrade its hub at Brussels from European to regional hub.
The decision follows on the Belgian government's refusal of DHL's plans for expanded night operations into Brussels Airport, making the company's future plans for Brussels futile.
The DHL management announced the decision at a meeting with staff on Wednesday night, and some 1,000 jobs will reportedly be axed by 2008, in addition to another 200 jobs at DHL's airline, EAT.
DHL is yet to decide on the future location of its European hub serving the company's Transatlantic flights and the extensive European network of freighter flights.
One option seems to be an airport in the eastern part of Germany, where Leipzig may be an option.
