NOV 18, 2004 (newstodate): The industry seems to agree that there is a need for a freighter service from the Far East to serve the market of West Denmark.
-Billund Airport could undoubtedly sustain a Far Eastern freighter service to support the industries in this part of Scandinavia and Northern Germany, says Torben Hartvigsen, DFDS Transport gateway manager, based at Billund.
-There is a manifest lack of uplift capacity out of destinations like Shanghai and other Far Eastern centers, and during peak seasons we do have problems in routing shipments to Billund through a variety of European continental hubs.
-Handling problems at Gothenburg Landvetter, where SAS operates its freighter services, also contribute to a difficult situation. Problems include prolonged hand-out times for import shipments, and quality problems in the airline trucking services, he says.
Mr Hartvigsen pins his hopes on the findings and results from a working group currently investigating the issue in an effort to attract an operator to establish a freighter service.
