DEC 08, 2004 (newstodate): Air India has decided on a tender for a major fleet program entailing procurement of a total of up to 50 aircraft, comprising two-thirds on firm orders, and the rest on options.
The fleet acquisition plan, which covers a period up to 2012-2013, provides for an increase in fleet size from the present 34 to 74 - a net addition of 40 aircraft.
Included in the program are medium capacity ultra-long range aircraft A340-500 or B777-200LR, medium capacity long range A340-600 or B777-300ER, and medium capacity long range A330-200 or B7E7-8.
In addition, the airline has also bought 18 Boeing 737-800 aircraft for its low-cost arm, Air India Express, slated for start up by April 2005.
Air India is also reportedly to set up a dedicated air cargo division from April 2005, and plans to lease freighter aircraft as well.
