DEC 15, 2004 (newstodate): AUA Cargo is claiming a leading position in East European air cargo, capitalising on its Vienna hub.
Air cargo is certainly booming at Vienna, where November volumes totalled 19,102 tonnes, up 17.1 percent, while the periode January-November generated a total of 191,147 tonnes, an increase by 21.5 percent over last year.
-Austrian Airlines now operates 470 flights per week to 38 destinations in Eastern Europe, but as we fly mainly small aircraft up to Airbus A320 family jets on these routes, we obviously need supplementary strategies to cater to the air cargo market, says Franz Zoechbauer, AUA VP Cargo.
-One strategy is to develop an extensive and intensive road feeder network between Vienna and the AUA traffic system connecting with the Americas, Asia and Australia. Another strategy is to build cooperation with other carriers providing freighter capacity that accept off-size and large-volume shipments.
-Our road feeder network operates on flight numbers, is scheduled like flights and observes the same criteria as flown transports, and the network is ever increasing in scope and frequencies.
-Our freighter services currently comprise the thrice-weekly operations together with Ukraine International Airways between Vienna and Kiev. We also cooperate with Eva Air on their twice-weekly cargo flights between Taiwan and Vienna, taking two pallets on a blocked-space agreement, Mr Zoechbauer says.
According to Mr Zoechbauer, AUA Cargo has no plans for own freighters, benefiting instead from highly flexible solutions with partner airlines allowing the company to adapt quickly to changing needs in the market.
