MAR 17, 2004 (newstodate): Cargo traffic between China and Europe will find a supplementary venue when plans for a projected railway connection, the New Eurasia Land Bridge, materialise.
A vice-president of Kazakhstan Railway Co., Ltd is currently in Hong Kong to raise funds for the project that will enter the construction phase from this year already.
The New Eurasia Land Bridge starts from the western coast of the Pacific and runs westward via Lanzhou and Urumqi to Alashankou Port at the western border of China. From there it will run to Druzhba Port in Kazakhstan and will end up at the Atlantic coast after linking 2.2 billion people in more than 40 countries in Asia and Europe.
The proposed railway will offer an alternative to the Transsiberian Railway, and besides being shorter in distance it will also do away with the inconveniences from differenct rail gauge standards lenthening transition by some eight hours at Russian entry and exit points.
The new railway will boast an annual carrying capacity of 40 million tons. After its completion, trains from either Hong Kong or other places of China will directly head for Europe without changing wheels at borders.
