MAR 18, 2004 (newstodate): Aeroflot is reportedly eyeing the acquisition of Povolzhiye- based joint-stock company Samara Airlines, owned 51 percent by the Russian state and 49 percent by private and corporate investors.
In 2003, Samara Airlines carried a total of 450.000 passengers, operating 29 aircraft including eight TU-134A, three TU-134B and eight TU-154M.
The acquisition would give Aeroflot access to a much needed aircraft fleet at the relatively low price of buying the state-owned shares.
Next step for Aeroflot would be taking over Samara's Kurumotch Airport as part of the airline's strategic plans for recapturing the Russian domestic market.
According to industry sources, another Russian carrier KrasAir is also targetting Samara as a future hub addition to their network
