APR 26, 2004 (newstodate): A team of African civil aviation professionals have set up an African Air Safety Enhancement Team (ASET)to assist in reducing air accidents in Africa by 50 percent by 2010.
The team aims at getting African governments to implement ICAOs recommendations, including the setting up of autonomous directorates of civil aviation.
Among the targets of the new organisation is a government ban on the sustained operation of old-generation, worn-out and ill-maintained aircraft, in most cases bought at low prices from companies in East Europe, and mostly owned by foreigners specialising in cargo, charter and ad-hoc flight operations.
