APR 22, 2004 (newstodate): While competition and liberalisation of civil aviation has changed the face of Europe's airfreight business, Finland remains an airfreight market still tightly dominated by its national carrier.
-Finnair Cargo still maintains its monopoly in this market, and the problem is that Nokia holds large allotments that they keep right up to departure time, making it very difficult for other exporters to book space in advance, says a Finnish freight forwarder, who prefers to remain anonynous.
-Our shipments are volume freight, making it very difficult for us to rely on Finnair Cargo, and still our customers demand fast services. We are therefore forced to truck our shipments out of Finland to connnect to freighter services out of Sweden or Continental Europe, he says.
-There is indeed a significant market in Finland for a freighter service to the Far East. I only wonder which company will come in, and when it will happen, he says.
Aeroflot has reportedly long been negotiating with Finnair Cargo to reach agreement on a code-shared freighter service to the Far East via Russia.
Korean Air Cargo operates a weekly freighter from Seoul into Helsinki, while it has been denied rights to take Finnish exports on a return flight, leaving instead empty on a ferry flight to Luxembourg
