APR 15, 2004 (newstodate): Next weekend marks the start of the new freighter service out of Northern Norway to serve the Japanese market for fresh Norwegian salmon.
The project group has contracted FedEx to operate an MD-11 freighter through Eveness to pick up 25 tonnes of salmon for Japan. No details on frequencies or routing have yet been released.
Originally it was planned to truck the salmon from production sites in Northern Norway into Luleaa Kallax Airport, Sweden, to be flown directly from there via the new trans-Siberian arctic routes into Japan. This would have provided Kallax Airport with its final break-through after years of planning and projecting.
But these plans were later changed to include a Polar Air uplift from Kallax into the airline's hub at Liege. This option was planned for take-off by January 17, but eventually stalled.
Among the participants in the project are the forwarding company Nord-Norsk Spedisjon, and DFDS Transport that is providing the operational solution. The parties are now meeting with FedEx in Eveness to firm up the project prior to its launch on Saturday or Sunday.
