MAY 19, 2004 (newstodate): As the current contract with DHL Aviation is running out later this year, BA World Cargo is making an assesment of how to build on experiences from the period since September 2003 when the short haul European freighters were introduced.
-We have been operating 20 frequencies to eight destinations, and the hub-system with aircraft from DHL Aviation collecting cargo and flying it into our main hubs, saving on lead times compared to road transportation, has worked very well indeed, says Gareth Kirkwood, BA World Cargo managing director.
-With the changed maps of Europe including the admission of 10 new member states into the EU, we are seeing bright prospects for continued expansion of this short haul freighter system to include more destinations and more capacity.
-We are now considering the options open to us, including other aircraft types, but we will definitely go for one, rather than a multiplicity of contracts with a host of providers, says Gareth Kirkwood.
Mr Kirkwood says the company has gained market shares in Europe thanks to the short haul freighters.
BAWC buys the full capacity on the aircraft operated, but in some cases DHL has booked own freight on the return trips of the aircraft.
