JUN 21, 2004 (newstodate): JAT's decision to move closer towards Boeing for deliveries of new aircraft leaves the issue of a final settlement with Airbus unsolved.
In 1998, JAT inked a contract worth USD 400 million with Airbus for purchase of eight A319 aircraft and paid USD 23 million up front.
The big question is if this money will be returned to JAT if the order is finally cancelled.
In a statement from JAT it is reported that the "disputable agreement" with Airbus was "duly noted", which might indicate that Boeing will take this fact into its calculations if an order for Boeing aircraft is landed with JAT.
-We have met with Airbus again three weeks ago, and the company's representatives are very friendly people, says Vesna Prlja, JAT director media office.
According to ms Prlja, Airbus offered a business solution including cooperation with JAT.
-Of course, as JAT has long been a Boeing-operator the integration of one Airbus type aircraft within a Boeing environment would be demanding, also considering our Boeing technical maintenance base, she says.
