JUN 17, 2004 (newstodate): Based on assistance from NATO, the World Bank, the International Civil Aviation Organization and other agencies Kabul International Airport is to be reconstructed and upgraded.
A project estimated to cost some USD40-60 mio comprises removal of mines from the airport area, updating of electrical and communications equipment, renovation of terminals, and installation of improved air traffic control facilities.
Kabul International Airport has about 50 to 60 flights a day but most of these are for the NATO-led peacekeeping International Security Assistance Force.
Airlines currently operating at Kabul include Pakistan International Airlines, Azerbaijan Airlines and Mahan Airlines, in addition to the domestic carrier Ariana.
