JUN 28, 2004 (newstodate): Singapore Airlines is heading for another world record today as its A340-500 ultra long-haul aircraft will take off on its inaugural non-stop flight from Singapore to New York.
The flight will traverse a distance of about 16,600km over the North Pacific, to set a new record for the worlds longest non-stop commercial flight.
The non-stop Singapore to New York service will beat the existing record set on February 3, 2004 with the launch of SIA's non-stop service between Singapore and Los Angeles.
The estimated flying time is about 18 hours, cutting some four hours off the time used by the earlier one-stop flights.
In 1998, SIA placed an order for 10 A340-500 aircraft including five firm orders and five options.
