JUL 30, 2004 (newstodate): On August 3, another step will be taken to ascertain the viability of a road in Greenland to connect Sisimiut municipality with Kangerlussuaq/Sdr Stromfjord Airport 170 km away.
This would become Greenland's longest road and require some 2.5-3 hours drive from Sisimiut on the west coast to reach the Atlantic airport.
Initial plans indicated that the road could be opened by October 1, 2008 after estimated investments of DKK 250-300 million and three years of construction work.
At the meeting on Tuesday, representatives from the municipality, Greenland's government and technical exports will meet to discuss which type of road would be more economically and operationally viable considering Greenland's demanding climate and limited economical resources.
The road would greatly enhance Sisimiut's logistic infrastructure and facilitate an expansion of the municipality's trade.
No binding political decision on the eventual realisation of the project has yet been reached, though.
