AUG 12, 2004 (newstodate): Maersk Air's decision to pull out of the Faroe Islands will definitely produce a vacuum in cargo uplift capacity.
-I am confident that this will create an opportunity for a freighter operator to enter the market as there is a strong need for a freighter service to fly Faroese exports of fresh fish to the UK and other markets, says Finnbogi Niclasen, Vagar Airport director.
According to Mr Niclasen, Maersk Air Cargo last year made approached to the island's fish exporters to probe into the freighter issue, but nothing much came out of this.
-Provided an operator will throw in suitable capacity on a small freighter basis I am convinced that there is a business case, and the Faroese media today are focussing very intensely on this issue, he says.
After Maersk Air's pull-out from the route, Atlantic Airways will be the sole operator. But as the airline will on Maersk Air's contract with the post office, industry sources see little capacity left for airfreight movements.
The airport director also point out that the Faroe Islands depend on import by air of a wide range of commodities including electronics, automotive and ships spares and other valuable shipments contributing to a balanced freighter operation.
