AUG 23, 2004 (newstodate): What is needed to develop the air cargo market in the Faroe Islands is not just a transport solution, but rather an integrated logistics solution, says an airline-based industry source.
-One thing is to lift fresh fish shipments from the Faroe Islands to a European airport. What is really needed is a logistics solution comprising airport handling at both ends, air transportation, forwarding and trucking directly into the North European supermarkets where the end-user will buy the product, he says.
-Based on an all-inclusive through-price concept, this service should be marketed among Faroese fish exporters and it should convince the market that this would secure a role for the country's fishery and fish processing industry. If this opportunity is not grasped, the end may be in sight, he says.
The current debate on the future of air cargo in the Faroe Islands is spurred by Maersk Air's decision to pull out, leaving Atlantic Airways alone in the market where air mail alone will take a significant share of the uplift capacity on the airline's small aircraft.
